Texas falls to 43 in national education ranking.

  New Jersey is the top state for education. It's followed by Massachusetts, Florida, Washington and Colorado to round out the top five. Six of the 10 states with. Among the individual metrics, Texas ranked No. 9 in affordability, No. 51 in education and health, No. 11 in quality of life and No. Texas fell to the bottom fifth of U.S. states in an annual report on education quality. Texas is now ranked 43rd in the nation, falling from 39th last year.

It also ranked low in adults with two- or four-year postsecondary degrees and parent educational attainment. Texas has one of the highest rates of English Language Learners in the country, and nearly 35 percent of households speak a language other than English. In El Paso, the percentage of non-English speaking households is more than double the state rate at 73 percent.

That score takes into account high school graduation rates, Advanced Placement scores and student performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
